Petrographic Microscope: A Case of Etiological Evolution
Petrographic microscope has gone a long way to reach its well-acclaimed optical status and instrumentation’ elegance that it rewardingly savors this day. Way before its construction, polarizing microscopy and other related accessories and inventions were the ones who monopolized the world of microscopic breakthroughs in optical information extraction, and more often than not, get the lion’s share of the mineralogical society’s commendation nod. Though the basic framework of mineral optics was already a shoe-in entry for century-mark mineralogical reviews progress-wise, still the hunt for a better and more quantitative approach of divulging the microstructures of a particular mineral is really much in for microscopes’ evolutionary race. If one is to scroll back then to historic account of mineralogical research, it is very much likely to find out that the creation of petrographic microscope has given a new meaning to the word ‘mineral,’ and there’s much more to offer on the line.

Going back to the very creation of the petrographic microscope, certain sort of laps and misnomers were made and recorded. It is to be noted that the termed “petrographic,” in its literal sense, is exclusively attributed to the functional part of the instrument. Mineralogical experts, however, made up with such overlook by casually coining the term within the light of the rock’s graphic texture study.
